TESSCO No. 346802 FEATURED MANUFACTURERS Two-way communications are critical in industrial environments that have areas with dangerous concentrations of flammable gases or dust. Those conditions are not uncommon at petrochemical refineries, mines, utilities and fuel distribution operations. Two-way radios with stan- dard use batteries pose a hazard in these environments. By contrast, "intrinsically safe" batteries are designed for safely operating electrical equipment in hazardous areas by limiting the energy avail- able for ignition. For handheld electronics, an intrinsically safe device is de- signed to be explosion-proof, meaning that it is incapable of producing heat or spark suffi- cient to ignite an explosion in the atmosphere. Intrinsically safe electronic devices reduce or eliminate internal sparking, control component tempera- tures and minimize compo- nent spacing that would allow dust to short a circuit. Several different agen- cies develop standards for intrinsic safety and evaluate products for compliance with standards. Agencies may be government affiliated or may include members from insur- ance companies, manufactur- ers and industries with an interest in safety standards. Certifying agencies allow manufacturers to affix a label or mark to validate that the equipment has been designed to the relevant product safety standards. In North America, such agencies include the Factory Mutual (FM) Research Corporation that certifies two- way radios and batteries and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) that certifies mo- bile phones. In Canada, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certifies two-way radios and batteries and mobile phones. Visit www.tessco.com/go/ twoway. TESSCO carries a full line of standard and intrinsically safe (IS) batteries for use in two-way and critical communications. Standard and IS batteries can be used with a variety of two-way radios and work with commercially available battery chargers.
