When natural disasters - such as Hurricane Katrina (2005), Hurricane Sandy (2012) and the "super derecho" that slammed the U.S. earlier that same year, and even the more recent "polar vortex" - decide to strike, the path of destruction is widespread. Power, gas, and communi- cation infrastructures are left vulnerable and often severely damaged, rendering them unusable for extended periods, leaving communities, or even entire re- gions, crippled. It is at these times that rapid restoration becomes an imperative. Temporary and portable facilities that can be transported into a disaster area will provide a measure of relief until permanent facilities can be repaired or replaced. New mobile tower platforms offer versatility and flexibility in a variety of critical and non-critical applications. Mobile towers are a versatile tool in any situation where height is a re- quirement and where no other suitable structure is available. One of the main applications of a mobile tower platform is to augment fixed communications networks. In cel- lular network applications, the mobile platform can be equipped with a cel- lular base station, antennas, cable, and power to create the so-called cell site on wheels (COW) that provides tempo- rary wireless service where wired plant or permanent cell sites are down. The resort underwent a $1 billion renovation of its original two towers, Chateau and Versailles, and construction of two new towers, Sorrento and Tresor. The hotel now offers more than 1,500 guestrooms and suites, 12 restaurants and lounges, and a 40,000 square foot spa on a 22-acre oceanfront site. The goal of the renovation was to reestablish Fontainebleau as the top resort in Miami. But amid the new luxury, there was a problem with wireless service. At the hotel's re-opening, man- agement began to get complaints about poor cellular service in some of the meeting rooms, public areas, and guestrooms on the east (ocean- front) side of the facility. Although the buildings are within sight of AT&T and Verizon Wireless cell towers, the signals didn't reach all areas of the property with enough strength to provide ad- equate coverage everywhere. "We didn't want to be known as the hippest hotel on the beach without mobile service cov- erage; we wanted to be the best hotel on the beach, period; so we knew we had to take care of the problem," said David Chin, Director of IT at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The TE Advantage Chin and his team considered several different so- lutions, including single-operator wireless systems and multi-operator wireless systems. Eventually, they decided to go with a multi-operator system to accommodate as many guests as possible by supporting service from the area's four major wireless operators - AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Chin chose the TE Connectivity InterReach Fusion system based on the compa- ny's reputation, the solution's better price/perfor- mance combination, and the outstanding service offered by TE's sales and support staff. "TE not only offered the most performance for the money, but they were incredibly responsive," says Chin. "We knew they were a major player in the in-building cellular business, but it was the structure of the deal and their incredible support that won us over. Their representative was onsite for every carrier walk-through, and his willingness to work with us was really important." Another advantage to the Fusion system was its ability to easily scale and support multiple wireless service providers with a single set of electronics.
